LPC Supervision
Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia involves a structured supervised residency period, governed by the Virginia Board of Counseling. This supervision is a critical part of developing clinical competencies and ethical standards necessary for independent practice.
The Purpose of LPC Supervision:
LPC supervision provides:
- Guidance in clinical skill development (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and interventions).
- Ethical and legal oversight, ensuring adherence to professional standards
- Support in developing a professional identity and managing complex cases.
- Preparation for licensure, including documentation and exam readiness.
Requirements for LPC Supervision in Virginia:
According to 18VAC115-20-52 of the Virginia Administrative Code:
Supervised Residency Requirements
- Minimum Hours:
- 3,400 total hours of supervised post-master’s clinical experience.
- Must be completed in no less than 21 months and no more than 60 months.
- Direct Client Contact:
- At least 2,000 hours must be in direct client services (e.g., therapy, assessments).
- Face-to-Face Supervision:
- At least 200 hours of supervision.
- Must include 100 hours of individual supervision (one-on-one with a board-approved LPC supervisor).
- The other 100 may be individual or group supervision.
