Peer Recovery Support

What It Is:

Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) are non-clinical, strength-based services provided by individuals who have lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or co-occurring conditions. These individuals, known as Peer Recovery Specialists or Peer Support Workers, are trained and certified to use their personal recovery journeys to support others seeking or maintaining recovery. PRSS is especially effective because it fosters hope and trust by connecting people with others who have “been there” and successfully navigated similar challenges.

PRSS is designed to complement clinical treatment by offering emotional support, mentoring, guidance, and practical assistance as individuals work toward long-term recovery goals. Services can be offered one-on-one or in group settings and often include:

  • Helping individuals develop recovery goals and action plans
  • Assisting with navigating treatment systems and accessing community resources
  • Offering emotional support and encouragement through shared experiences
  • Supporting relapse prevention and wellness strategies
  • Promoting self-advocacy and empowerment
  • Helping with re-entry after hospitalization or incarceration
